Where to start, where to start, well it ends with a teacher (maybe late 50s) throwing a large book at a first grade student......
This teacher does not have any business being a teacher if she can't handle a first grader. Mind you this student is not one of those out of control kids that has major problems, he isn't a perfect stepford child either. He excels academically. To other teachers and educators, the ones who actually care, his high spirit and creativity has been seen as an asset. Lets call him student G.
Student G was fine until this year at, lets say, Fong Lellow Elementary School.
Student G has had already several teachers in preschool and kindergarten. He tested all of them (most kids do) but all of them set the rules and didn't have any problems within a couple of weeks.
Well teacher B apparently cannot handle children that do not act perfectly in her class.
When student G was younger he had a speech impediment and developmental delay. When the teacher met with the parents, she blamed them, teacher B said it was the parents fault. "Did they talk baby talk to him when he was a baby" Did they feed him a proper diet.... WHAT?
As a participant of the IEP meeting, the teacher did nothing but bash the parents and the student. She did not offer any productive ways to help or work together as a team to help the child.
Well I know the mother of this child and I can say she is a better mother than me.
Book incident, when one of the parents met with the principal she did nothing but continue to blame the student. Getting a first grader to explain a story in detail or in correct order is not an easy task. The principal asked few questions. When there was any hint of confusion or misunderstanding in the child's words, she used it as an excuse to imply that he was lying. When APS student services was called they said they would check with the principal, the principal said she did an investigation.... the teacher denied it. That's where it ended. It seems like there is dead end any time APS gets a complaint. I think the school is trying to get people to give up.
These incidents are just two out of many that happened throughout the school year. They are two encounters that made the parents of student G lose faith in this teacher, Fong Lellow, and APS. These along with the many other negative experiences student G and his family experienced during his first grade year, unfortunately, overshadowed what should have been the primary focus of first grade--educational growth and fun.
My son actually went to the same school years ago, the politics haven't seemed to have changed.
I do have to say: I believe that probably most teachers are good, and they enjoy what they do. They do not have an inferiority complex and have to assert their power on to students who are too young to realize what is happening.
Please share your story with us.
The incident brought clarity as to why student G was never able to excel in this class as he has others. If this happened, what else could have happened, when no one was looking? Being that student L's family and concerned extended family members witnessed or experienced an attitude of contempt and disdain from teacher B and school administrators, the parents are considering filing assault charges. What do you think . . . answer my poll.
